Voodoo Glow Skulls - Port Hueneme, CA - 2/18/23
Voodoo Glow Skulls is a ska punk band formed in 1988 in Riverside, California. Since their first album Who Is, This Is? in 1993, they have released a total of ten albums with the latest one being Livin' the Apocalypse in 2021. VGS have constantly been touring and this year is no exception. A string of tour dates was announced and one of them was at the Ocean View Pavilion Center in Port Hueneme, California which included other punk bands. By the time VGS was ready to come on stage the venue was nicely packed with punk rockers both locally and who most likely also traveled from out of town.
The members of VGS came out one by one and started their show with Human Piñata. Right away you could hear their sound that sets them apart from other punk bands which includes a saxophone and trombone. Their live shows are very energetic and always lots of fun. Fans up front were singing along and going wild. Fans right behind them were moshing the whole night. Other fun songs played in their set included Shoot the Moon, Fat Randy, The Karen Song and a cover of Charlie Brown originally by The Coasters. At one point, the band's mascot Voodoo Man comes out to dance with the band. The final song of their performance is their most popular song, Voodoo Anthem. It features their catchy phrase of "Who do voodoo we do? Fuck you!". During this song is when the fans go the craziest and sing along to the song. Even the Voodoo Man comes out with a flip sign with the song's main phrase. VGS is a super fun band to see live and are always a highlight whether they're playing their own shows or at a festival. If you see them coming to your area, definitely see their set as you'll easily become a new fan.
