IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994)

Psychological thriller, fantasy, mystery, and horror all in one. That's the gist of Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. Sam Neill (before he was a paleontologist) plays an investigator hired to look at insurance claim from a publisher. He then is hired to look into the disappearance of an author Sutter Cane, after he is almost attacked in broad daylight by Cane's agent who went insane after reading one of his books. We get pure Carpenter style here; a bit of mystery, some crazy characters, some fantasy elements; and the narrative is enough to keep you interested to see what happens until the very end. The movie starts off with Neill's character in a psychiatric hospital and we hear his recount on how he got brought there. Stay until the great ending and you'll be treated to what Cabin in the Woods tried to replicate...not that it wasn't successful...but you can't top the original. Check this one out, especially if you're a fan of Carpenter.
