Creepshow 2 (1987)

Ok...I get it. Sequels are one of the most polarizing topics in all of pop culture...do they generally suck? Generally better? While there are those undisputed classics, occasionally some pop up that are just...meh...at least compared to the first. CREEPSHOW 2 tries to replicate the success of the first classic by bringing back the stylish pages-to-movie look of comic book stories gone horror. And it almost succeeds. We go from 5 stories of the first movie..to 3 stories in this venture, with an animated wrap-around segment. While this sequel does pale in comparison to the first (we do lose Georgre Romero as director), where it succeeds is when it wants to get nasty and mean spirited it pulls no punches. Look no further than the Raft segment especially. While I do believe the first segment, 'Ol Chief Wooden Head' could be dramatically improved, the remaining stories hold enough weight to at least admit that they tried in this one. And if you had a fear of picking up hitchhikers before watching this, you definitely won't ever even want to see one after watching the final segment. And Tom Savini pulls off a Not-Cryptkeeper role that's amusing in the opening and final part of the wrap-around segment. While this film may leave some of us with a bad taste in our mouths, the rest of us may indeed tell the screen "Thanks for the ride...lady" after viewing is complete.
